Forum Migration

Postby davean » Wed Mar 23, 2016 9:50 am UTC

I just migrated the forums to new hardware. DNS will take a few hours to settle. Please let me know if you see any new issues.

• Emoji no longer work (they display fine, I just can't post them)
• Any chance of bringing back subsilver as an option? The forum looks all weird now, and too similar to other forums.

Edit to add: Also, this topic isn't appearing in my egosearch for some reason.

Is there no longer an option to have names/avatars on the left instead of on the right?

It also looks like the width is reduced, expecting me to be on a phone or some such modern contrivance.

In the upper left, the three horizontal lines are a menu that has that.

Not just new hardware, new version of phpBB too. Fuck this smartphone UI design. Time to find a Stylish script to turn this back into SubSilver.

I agree that the reduced width is annoying.

To be honest, I also agree that "the forum looks all weird now" in a bad way, but then I hate change. But for what it's worth, I far, far prefer SubSilver to this.

Yeah, it's driving me off my rocker because it's so ridonkulously narrow. To make matters worse, it has a fucking hamburger button.

Can we get the "new posts" button back rather than having to go through "quick links"? I've been on other forums that have made this change – and to be frank, I really hate it when sites increase the number of clicks needed to perform a given action.
And remember, my friends, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

This narrow width is awful on any screen that's bigger than 1200 pixels or so. It's peculiar how the width shrinks to accommodate smaller screens but won't expand for larger ones.

Was there any reason for changing the version of phpBB as well or just because it had to be installed anyway the newest on was choosed?

I second the width issue. And would like to be able to see avatars and such on the left (though I imagine I'll get used to that).

I cannot get the Search Function to actually work.

Can someone else confirm?

You can all suggest themes from https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styles-2 or create a custom one for this board. Or use the 'Allan Style - SUBSILVER' option.

Under the user control panel --> board settings there is an alternate theme that is close(r) to what it used to look like, including much more width.

Hmm. This at least gives us back "unanswered posts" and "active topics", but "new posts" (which I've always used to browse forums) is still hidden behind the hamburger button.

Thanks, davean! It's close, at least. But there's still the right-side avatars/info (Allan Style - SUBSILVER is still a prosilver-based style). Would it be possible to try out the actual prosilver2 style? Though, I think it might break some plugins/add-ons. Not sure if we're using any of those.

The 'ingredients' are still working for me. (Boo! Hiss! Or at least I'm confused as to how they may have stopped working for others.) The width looks Ok to me (on this old monitor... maybe if I changed to my newer machine's widescreen profile monitor it would be different). I quickly found out that Quick Links|Your Posts was what I wanted (third time lucky, though, it wasn't as explicit as "New posts in threads in which you have posted", and I actually half expected that to be the same as "This person's posts" under my own Profile).

The biggest fix is that the Lawmakers' Lunacy global 'wool' now seems to properly identify the proper last post seen, unlike before.

And I'm so new(ly registered) to this forum that I haven't become a stick-in-the-mud, and I was already still finding little surprises, and now I expect to find more little surprises, as I (re)assimilate to yet another slightly different variation in forum. Obviously all you oldbies were not expecting to do this, right now, but I'm all right Jack! ;)

The ingredients only work if you manually enable them through the control panel (or at least if you don't disable them). Which sort of defeats the whole point of Chocolate chips. Which is why I'm trying to apply the ingredients manually.

According to my egosearch, the only thread I have posted in is "maximize your post to views". I'm pretty sure this is not the case.

I've not got one thread thread on my Egopost page, I've got eight. (All threads I've participated in, but not all the ones I've posted to; I'm also sure it's not just the "latest eight" and I know it's not just "eight threads that I've visited since the update", either, as only two are of that status.)

But I mention this as a datum point, only.

As another data point: the first time I went to "view your posts" (which was, incidentally, the first time I loaded the new forum - my bookmark goes to the "view your posts" page), it showed the full list, or at least what looks like the full list (though it still says "Search found 1 match • Page 1 of 1" up the top).

By chance, I still have that tab open.

Subsequent times loading the page, though, it only has one thread (for me, FaiD FT), which also happens to be the thread that was first in the list (ie it was the one that had the most recent last post).

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}
